For those who are new to Safari Zoo Run like me, it’s an interesting fact to note that the run was first put together in memory of Singapore’s most famous matriarch and Sumatran Orang Utan – Ah Meng, who died of old age in February 2008.
Besides commemorating Ah Meng, the Safari Zoo Run also aims to encourage family bonding and raise awareness on wildlife conservation. What an amazing way to keep fit as a family and help save the wildlife at the same time!
Ever since I told the children we’ll be taking part in the Safari Zoo Run, they have been pretty psyched and can’t wait for the day to come. How cool it must be for the children, to be able to run with all the zoo animals cheering for them on the sides!
I’ve also shared with them that there are four animal icons for the Safari Zoo Run – Ah Meng the Orangutan, Chawang the Asian Elephant, Canola the Manatee and Sunny the Hornbill – and that we can all run for one animal each, to support the endangered wildlife species that each animal icon is representing. They are undecided as to which animal they wish to run for. It’s so difficult to choose!
With a little more than 3 months to go before race day, we’ll be making full use of our Friends of Wildlife membership (as though we haven’t already. Haha!) by visiting the Singapore Zoo and the other three wildlife reserves a couple more times. Hopefully, the children will be able to learn a little more and familiarize themselves with all the four animal icons so as to help them decide which animal icon and their cause they want to support. Good idea, eh? Definitely beats the usual outdoor run along the park connector. Hehe.
The 9th installment of the Safari Zoo Run is happening at the Singapore Zoo next year on 18 February. With competitive and non-competitive categories to cater to individuals and families, everyone can join in the Safari Zoo Run, which has running routes ranging from 2.5km to 10km.
Children from as young as 4 years old can participate and receive runner’s entitlement, while children 3 and below can participate in the non-competitive family categories for free (without runner’s entitlement)!
From now till 30 November 2016, all registration made for the Safari Zoo Run will enjoy Early Bird Rates. And if you use this discount code – SZR2017BGPASTILL10 – you’ll be able to enjoy 10% off current rates as long as you register by 15 January 2017 via www.safarizoo.run! How exciting!
Our family cannot wait to participate in our first Safari Zoo Run next year and we hope to see you there!
Remember to warm up before your run,
