… Continuation from For the Love of Terrariums!
The next most natural step for me was to create my own terrarium as I wasn’t satisfied with any that I’ve seen so far – all greens and no blooms.
It didn’t take me long to decide the flowering plant to be used. I knew at the very moment when I was determined to make my own terrarium with blooms that it will be none other than Orchids.
Whilst doing my research, I chanced upon Toh Garden. I was psyched.
I made my way down to the gardens, located a little way off Choa Chu Kang, and was immediately in love! The blooms all around made me feel so happy!
There were so many different types of orchids around,
it made me giddy with happiness!
So many orchids, which one should I choose?!
I wasn’t kidding when I said there were a lot of orchids around!
And I met our national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim
I felt like I was in some kind of flower power wonderland, but I didn’t forget the task on hand. After being absolutely mind-boggled by the sheer amount of orchid types before me, I asked the owner to assist me with my orchid terrarium project and he kindly showed me around the types of orchids that would be suitable.
Unfortunately, he said that while orchids are pretty hardy and easy to care for, it might prove to be a challenge based on the description of my place (hardly any sunlight). A good majority of the orchids require at least 50% direct sunlight – something I don’t get in my own place 🙁
Perhaps he saw the disappointment in my eyes, he quickly suggested that there is a kind of flowering plant that would suit my home well and for my terrarium project.
Air Plants!
I brought some of these babies home and began work on it… Which will be shared in the next post because motherly duties beckons!
P.S. I went back to the farm a few weeks after my first visit (and will be heading back there again, because it’s now a place I go to de-stress :P) and one of the workers recognized me! He saw me taking photos again and offered to take photos of me with the flowers!
I guess it helped being the only weekday walk-in customer. Haha!
