Flashback Friday #61: Holding the Milk Bottle

October 11, 2013

When we took the mittens off Nakayla for good when she was about 7 weeks old, we started to train her to hold her own milk bottle. It didn’t happen so early with Blake. Being new parents, we only removed his mittens when he was about 4 months old, and even then, we didn’t bother teaching him how to hold his own bottle till he started cruising.

My mom told me that when I was still a baby, I started holding my milk bottle from the young age of 6 months old. Obviously, it took a while for me to accomplished that feat with constant training.

So we did just that with Nakayla.

When she was around 2 months old, we started by putting her hands on the bottle, and holding them in place with our hands. From time to time, we would let got to let her hold the bottle on her own for as long as she could. But given her age, she wasn’t strong enough to hold more than 2 seconds. Just enough for one or two photos before she let go.

The initial training to to just get her used to the idea of holding a bottle. We only started the tougher training at about 5-6 months old. By tougher, I mean giving her the bottle and not holding it for her at all. Only popping the bottle back in when it drops. We did this for a few weeks before she was happy to hold the milk bottle completely on her own. There were times when she refused to hold the milk bottle on her own, but we got Blake to help. He was more than happy too. Hehe.

It wasn’t until she was about 7-8 months old that she figured out that she had to move the bottle up and down to get to all of the milk from the bottle into her mouth. Prior to that, we adjusted the bottle for her. After she figured that out, she started to want to hold her own bottle. And now, she developed her own style of holding the milk bottle. Haha!

  1. Nakayla is so adorable. And she is able to hold the bottle at such young age too!
Lauren hated the mittens. She would yank them off as soon as I put them on. I finally gave up around 2 months old.
