Meet the Parents

Turning 26

July 17, 2013

A year ago today, the day I turned a quarter of a century old, I was pregnant with Nakayla, dropping Blake off at school before heading to work. Last year, I had no cake, but quite a memorable birthday because of the events that unfolded.

This year, I had a mini celebration with the family over the weekend 🙂

The boy was particularly cheerful and was really cooperative on the day of celebration! I love it 😀

Got him to hold the bottle for Nakayla
He was making slurping sounds to get her to drink. Haha!

We then proceeded to my mom’s place for dinner with my aunts, uncles and cousins.

See the cake in the photos above? I baked it myself. Hehe. I just had to, with my baking mojo back on! The first and last time I baked my own birthday cake, I was celebrating my 22nd birthday.

Trying out fondant for the very first time

After that mad rush, I decided to stop baking my own birthday cake… Until now, of cos 🙂

Here’s a close up of my 26th birthday cake:

Inspired by BS’ in the Kitchen

I say inspired because I used a completely different cake and icing recipe from the website. For the cake, any basic white cake recipe would do – Just make sure it’s one that you like!

As for the icing, I did some research and found this – Wilton’s High Humidity Icing Recipe.

I read the reviews, and decided to give it a go. I must say, I’m very pleased with it. I’ll never ever have to rush any decorating works ever again!

Creaming and layering the cake with the high humidity icing is no easy job!

But decorating with it was easy-peasy!

Alright, back to the photos from the party 😛

See the hands all going for the icing that fell as Sean and I were cutting the cake?

Note to self: Have the hubs cut and serve the first slice of cake!
This is the neatest inside-of-the-cake I have a photo of!

I can only say, I am super happy, and satisfied with the result! Hehe. I will work harder and improve my decorating technique. There’s still plenty of room to improve!

Definitely another memorable birthday for me 🙂

P.S. Big thanks to my cousin, Yuting, for taking the photos for me!

    1. Thank you! I can show you how to do the icing decorations, but I’m not very good at it. Haha!

  1. wow!! love the cake! I’ve always admired ppl who can bake coz I can’t or rather too chicken to try n no oven to bake to begin with haha. so when r u opening your bakery?

    1. Haha! Thank you, Janice. I’m still rather amateurish when it comes to baking, mostly decorating. Haha. Still learning… but when asked to, and for the right price, I actually do bake and sell 😛

  2. You did an awesome job!!! OMG! Did you pipe out the flower one after another? I want to learn too!!

This is definitely a fabulous birthday!

  3. Happy birthday! Your cake is so pretty! You should do a video tutorial of how you did the pretty rosettes. Heh. Wish I could decorate cakes like that too, but I think it’ll never happen because I have shaky hands. 🙁

    1. This icing decoration is PERFECT for shaky hands because you can cover it up! Hahaha! I actually learnt how to do this off Youtube 😛

  4. Wow, lovely cake! Glad to hear that u got your baking mojo back. The cake you made for your 22 bday is really impressive as well!

    1. Thanks, Rachel! My 22nd birthday was a big rush and I didn’t like how the fondant turned out cos of all the holes. Totally didn’t expect my kitchen counter top to be that small. Sigh. I stopped using fondant after! Haha.

  5. Sorry I am a little late in my greetings. Happy belated birthday!

that cake looks really really amazing! Definitely fit for sale!
